The Health and Wellness Summit and Expo is a project sponsored by Sankofa Safe Child Initiative in collaboration with Congressman Danny K. Davis, the Illinois Medical District, and an array of corporations, health associations, social service agencies, government entities, and the faith-based community.
The purpose of the Summit is to highlight and address problems associated with preventative care, access to healthy food choices, healthy lifestyle choices, chronic disease and treatment options in the 7th Congressional District and surrounding areas.
The 7th Congressional District has high prevalence rates of chronic kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension.
This high profile event will kick-off in the Illinois Medical District, at the Illinois Medical District building, located at 2100 W. Harrison. Several organizations and health related groups in the Illinois Medical District will host activities including the University of Illinois, Rush Hospital, Core Center, and the John Stroger Hospital.

MedDiaries has grown through leaps and bounds this past summer. The diaries have been finalized and we have started to distribute them around the Chicagoland area. OCP board member, John Raseman has put in many hours over the summer months passing out the diaries and educating the general population on how to use them. Here he is shown with a few friends from the Franciscan Outreach Soup Kitchen and Shelter on the west side of Chicago. |

We are looking for M1's who would be interested in eventually taking over ongoing projects in OCP and perhaps starting a few of your own. We are recruiting early so there is ample time to work together, show you guys the ropes, and make sure you are comfortable in managing the organization.
MedReferrals - a website that has all the clinics in the area organized into a simple and easy to use website. The work here now is to simply get the name out and start showing people around the city how to use it. Also to organize events to demo website and attend events where you will use the website to connect the uninsured with accessible care.
MedDiaries - A convenient pocket diary that patients can carry around with them from physician to physician. Phase one of distribution and follow-up was completed this summer, and we are seeking a group of individuals to develop phase two in hopes of using portable health diaries to improve delivery of care to the undeserved.
MedFairs - Medical fairs around the city at homeless shelters, food pantries etc. (such as Breaking Bread)
MedSkills - M1 orientation clinical skill workshop
Email exec@originalchangeproject.com if you are interested in becoming involved. Thank you!! |

OCP would like to thank all the volunteers who came to our health fair at Lincoln Methodist Church on January 16th! In partnership with LMSA, we were able to provide education, screening, and referrals to over 70 people in need! There were also about 8 young children who wanted to learn about listening to heart sounds and taking blood pressure. Many of them explained that they would like to be doctors someday, and were thrilled to hear their own hearts through the stethoscope for the first time!
Overall the day was a great success and we could not have done it without your support. |
